A four day Incident Response to Terrorist Bombing Class in New Mexico is available to Fire Fighters. This class is free with all transportation, room and meals provided by Homeland Security. Membership in the Mississippi Fire Fighters Association will give you free entry into the Annual Conference and all training activities.  Go to http://www.mffa.com/ for the latest information about the  conference and membership information. The State Fire Coordinator has stated that the membership fee to this organization can be considered as a training expense.

Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter I: Up-Grade Program
Course Number EC MVFF-UP
Course Description:
The MSFA acknowledges that many Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighters completed the previous edition of the Volunteer Fire Fighter-I course. This program is designed to provide an avenue for these fire fighters to complete the Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter I course. Many classroom, practical activities, and testing hours were spent earning the previous certification version. As a result, the MSFA has developed this format to allow these veteran fire fighters to "up-grade" to the current level of training. The course consists of classroom, practical activities, and written exams. There is no skills exam for this program, however, the completion of each practical activity will be enforced.

Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter-I (prior to 2009).

Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter I - Module 1 Course Number EC MVFF-M1 This course is administered through an Instructor approved by the County Fire Coordinator. Course Description: This module is designed to provide the entry level Volunteer Fire Fighter with a foundation of knowledge and skills to build on. The course is administered through the local County Fire Training Officer. Subjects covered include fire behavior, personal protective equipment, ropes and knots, etc. This course references NFPA Standard 1001. Prerequisite: Must be at least 18 years old Student Manuals: Jones and Bartlett Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 2nd Edition Course Hours: 66 EMT Hours: 14 Steps to deliver this program at your location: This course will not be considered as in session until the request form and all applications are received. 1. Contact the course coordinator at MSFA to obtain a course request form. All instructors must have completed Fire Instructor-I. 2. MSFA course coordinator will forward course CD to instructor when request form is approved. Course CD will contain MSFA roll sheet, PowerPoint, etc. 3. Instructor will ensure that the appropriate MSFA roll sheet and student applications are completed on the first night of class. Roll sheet and student applications must be forwarded to the MSFA course coordinator immediately. 4. Instructor will immediately inform the MSFA coordinator of any changes to the course (dropped students, injuries, etc.) 5. Instructor will ensure that all classroom sessions are delivered and all activities are completed by each student. 6. Instructor will notify the MSFA to request the written test. A written test package is mailed to instructor. The instructor will ensure that the complete test package is returned to the MSFA course coordinator immediately. 7. Instructor will be informed of the written test scores. 8. Students who score 70 or above on the written test will be allowed to participate in Module 2 at the MSFA. Module 2 is the skills test. Students who score below 70 are eligible for a 2nd attempt. 9. Instructor will ensure that these students complete an MSFA student application for Module 2. Students must complete Module 2 within 12 months of completing Module 1 This course includes the classroom, practical activities, and written tests for the Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter-I program.

Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter I - Module 2 Course Number EC MVFF-M2 Test Date: Deadline For Receiving All Registration Documents: February 27, 2010 February 5, 2010 April 17, 2010 April 2, 2010 April 30, 2010 April 16, 2010 November 6, 2010 October 22, 2010 November 12, 2010 October 29, 2010 Module 2 is the skills exam at the Mississippi State Fire Academy. Testing begins at 8:00 a.m. Participants must have completed Module 1 within the last 6 months. Course Hours: 8 EMT Hours: 4 Fee: $30 - Group A $60 - Group B Pre-Registration required - Application and fee must be received at least 10 days prior to testing day. No refunds are issued. Dorm extra $15 per night. Other: Each student must have NFPA compliant turn-out gear. Academy will provide SCBA. All participants must be clean-shaven. NFPA 1500-5.39 states: “A growth of beard or facial hair at any point where the SCBA facepiece is designed to seal with the face, regardless of the specific fit test measurement that can be obtained, or hair that could interfere with the facepiece to use SCBA.” Students who complete Module 1 and Module 2 will receive certification of Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter-I and a patch. Note: Students are encouraged to bring their lunch. Lunch times may vary.

Mississippi  Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter II - Module 1 Course Number EC MCV-II-M1 Course Description: Module I includes the classroom presentations, practical activities, and written tests. This course is designed to address subjects that meet the NFPA 1001 standard for Fire Fighter-II. The course allows the student who successfully completed the Volunteer Fire Fighter-I program the opportunity to continue building on his/her knowledge and skills. The course is administered through an instructor approved by the County Fire Coordinator. The course manual is the same manual required for the new Volunteer Fire Fighter-I program. The course core subjects for the Volunteer Fire Fighter-II pro-gram include: Fire Service Communications Incident Command System Fire Suppression Pre-Incident Planning Vehicle Rescue and Extrication Fire Prevention and Public Education Prerequisite: Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter-I (2009 version or above). Students who complete the Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter-I prior to 2009 will have the opportunity to complete the 2010 version through the Mississippi Volunteer Fire Fighter-I Up-Grade Program. Student Manual: Jones and Bartlett Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 2nd Edition. Course Hours: 30 EMT Hours: 8 Steps to Deliver This Program at Your Location: 1. The local host is responsible for securing an instructor to teach the program. The instructor must be trained to the level of NFPA Instructor 1041-I. 2. Contact the MSFA course coordinator to receive a course request form. 3. Ensure that the course request form and student applications are forwarded to the MSFA. a. All students must complete a MSFA admissions application. Forward all applications to the MSFA Office of Admissions. b. The course will not be considered in session until the request form and student applications are received. The course request form must be received by the course coordinator at least 1 month prior to the date you request to start the course. 4. After reviewing your course request form and student applications are received, the course coordinator will forward the Instructor CD containing the course information. 5. On the first night of class, you must ensure that all student information is clearly printed or typed on the roll sheet. The roll sheet must be immediately forwarded to the course coordinator. 6. When the course is near completed, you must contact the MSFA course coordinator to request a date for the written test. The written test will be administered at your location by the MSFA. The written test date request must be approved by the MSFA coordinator. 7. Students who score 70 or above on written test will be allowed to participate in Module 2. Students who score below 70 are eligible for a 2nd attempt. Module 2 is the skills exam at the MSFA. 8. Students who complete Module-I must complete Module-2 within 12 months of completing Module-1. Otherwise, the student must complete Module-1 again to be eligible for Module-2. This procedure is to help ensure safety for the student. Exceptions must be approved by the MSFA.


Mississippi Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter ii - Module 2 (Skills Exam) Course Number EC MCV-II-M2 Module 2 of the Volunteer Fire Fighter II Program is the skill exam at the local department or regional location. The lead instructor is responsible for requesting a skill test date and time. Test Date: Deadline For Registration: May 15, 2010 April 30, 2010 October 23, 2010 October 8, 2010 Testing begins at 8:00 a.m. Students are responsible for their own meals. Pre-registration is required. Course Hours: 8 EMT Hours: 2 Course Fee: $30 Dorm $15/night if requested Other: Students must bring their full set of turn-out gear. Students must complete Module 2 within 6 months after completing Module 1. Students who complete Module 1 and Module 2 will receive the certification of Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter-II. Note: Students are encouraged to bring their lunch. Lunch periods may vary.
